MISSION ACADEMY OF PERFORMING ARTS & BRAVA PRESENTS

SATURDAY, APRIL 20 – 7PM

Written by Enda Walsh

Production Design by San Francisco Running Crew

Please join Mission Academy of Performing Arts @ Brava for their annual 2019 Spring Production of Enda Walsh's Chatroom. The play takes place in the virtual space of an internet chatroom. A group of bored and restless teenagers – William, Jack, Eva, Emily and Laura – spend their time deconstructing children’s literature and the messages in modern pop music. But when a new member, Jim, joins to share his depression and thoughts of suicide, the conversation takes a dark turn. The group is torn between those who want to help and those who see this as a chance to create a martyr for the teenage population.

Chatroom was first performed as part of the 2005 National Theatre Connections season, an annual festival of new plays for youth theaters and schools. It received its first professional production in the Cottesloe auditorium of the National Theatre, London, on 10 March 2006.

MISSION ACADEMY OF PERFORMING ARTS @BRAVA is a consortium of youth arts programs that train students ages 13–18 in theatrical production and performance. The consortium includes San Francisco Running Crew, Brava’s hands-on training program in theater production, design, and management, run by Melvign Badiola; Cuicacalli Escuela de Danza, which explores the traditions of Mexican Baile Folklorico, hip hop, and modern dance styles, founded by Jesus Cortes; Mariachi Juvenil La Misión, where students learn mariachi-style music through individual coaching and classes, led by Ariana Cortes; and Young Thespians Theater Lab, offering students high quality performing instruction integrating drama, movement, and music, led by Bay Area Theatre Company Founder Marcelo J. Pereira.

MAPA@Brava is funded in part by California Arts Council, Department of Children Youth & Their Families, Grants for the Arts, Walter and Elise Haas Fund, Miranda Lux Foundation, and the San Francisco Arts Commission.
